Weighing Milky Way satellites with LISA

چکیده
ABSTRACT White dwarf stars are a well-established tool for studying Galactic stellar populations. Two white dwarfs in tight binary system offer us an additional messenger – gravitational waves exploring the Milky Way and its immediate surroundings. Gravitational produced by double (DWD) binaries can be detected future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Numerous widespread DWDs have potential to probe shapes, masses, formation histories of populations neighbourhood. In this work we outline method estimating total mass satellite galaxies based on number LISA. To constrain perform Bayesian inference using population synthesis models considering associated with measured distance as only inputs. Based fiducial model find that large satellites masses recovered within (1) factor 2 if star history (SFH) is known (2) order magnitude when marginalizing over different SFH models. For smaller place upper limits their mass. wave observations provide measurements comparable, some cases more precise, than standard electromagnetic observations.

Probing the Epoch of Reionization with Milky Way Satellites
While the connection between high-redshift star formation and the local universe has recently been used to understand the observed population of faint dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way (MW) halo, we explore how well these nearby objects can probe the epoch of first light. We construct a detailed, physically motivated model for the MW satellites based on the state-of-the-art Via Lactea II dark-mat...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Function of the Milky Way Satellites
We quantify the algorithmic detectability of stellar Milky Way satellites in data release 5 (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and use this to estimate the luminosity function of faint satellite galaxies in our halo. We develop a satellite detection algorithm based on the convolution of the DR5 star catalog with a kernel of zero net flux that is the difference of a narrow positive Ga...
متن کاملCandidate Milky Way Satellites in the Galactic Halo
Aims. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with 120◦ < α < 270◦, 25◦ < δ < 70◦ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. Methods. Five candidates are identified as overdensities of faint stellar sources that have color-magnitude diagrams similar to those of known globular clusters or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The distance to each candidate...
متن کاملOn the common mass scale of the Milky Way satellites
We use a hybrid approach that combines high-resolution simulations of the formation of a Milky Way-like halo with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to study the mass content of dwarf galaxies in the concordance ΛCDM cosmology. We find that the mass within 600 pc of dark matter haloes hosting luminous satellites has a median value of ∼ 3.2× 10 M⊙ with very little object-to-object scatter...
متن کاملCosmic Star Formation from the Milky Way and its Satellites
We use observations and evolutionary models of local objects to interpret a recent determination of the star-formation history of the universe. By fitting the global star-formation rate, the model predicts the ratio of spheroid to disk mass of ∼1, an intergalactic medium (IGM) whose mass is ∼2.3 times the mass in stars, and whose metallicity is ∼0.1 Z⊙.
